The Flower Power Project came from my friend Nadia Danti’s head and heart (she’s the angel above and below right). She was like “hey Hannah, I know we’re all really busy but you wanna use some of our backyards and grow heaps of flowers to give away for free to people doing good work in our local community as a way of saying thanks?”
Me…. “Ken-oath I do’.

And so we did. Last winter we put a call out for dahlia tuber donations and we’re happily inundated. We then proceeded to plant them in in spring across a few different urban gardens and a corner of a market garden quietly growing pure love for us and our community.
But how exactly did the whole project work? Good question. We had some guidelines for people to follow to make it practical and easy for us to actually deliver… In a snapshot….
- The recipient of the flowers needs to be in nipaluna/Hobart,
- People nominated someone in their community, wrote a love letter to them and then sent it to us via direct messages on our Instagram page. We simply asked people to share a love letter to someone in your community outlining why they appreciated them so much. It could be someone you knew intimately or someone you admire from afar doing great work in the community.

- Importantly, they had to Include the delivery address in their message and then each week we randomly picked some to deliver a big bunch of flowers too along with your love note.
- With permission, we then shared some of these letters on our Instagram with a photo of the bunch of flowers to further spread the joy/love/goodness.
Do yourself a favour and head on over to our Instagram page to see the flowers AND TO READ THE LETTERS in each caption. They’ll probably make you cry cause people are awesome when they choose to be which is mighty evident in this project.
Will we do it again? Hell yeah. Next summer/autumn we’ll be back at it with a few tweaks but basically the same model. We highly encourage other people to do something like this in their own communities. It’s relatively easy thing to do with small inputs required but big impacts made.

Ladies, what a lovely idea. I especially support giving men flowers and have really cheered friends & brothers up by doing that.
I minded a friend’s little girl once & took her to buy flowers for her mum and she intuitively bought Dad a bunch too, and why not?
I have a plot in the Community Gardens on Mparntwe Alice Springs & have decided to focus on flowers for bees, beauty and because I am not the veggie gardener people think I am…. herbs, carrots, lettuce & beetroot will do me plus micro greens at home.
I love reading your newsletter & living vicariously through you, so keep enjoying a happy and meaningful life.
