Home Harvest: Thoughts & A Virtual Tour 2023

Mar 20, 2023

Home Harvest is an edible garden trail around nipaluna/Hobart that we started in collaboration with the City of Hobart in 2020. Here’s the latest one from 2023 – it was an absolute ripper of a day!

Over 700 people took themselves around to some incredibly diverse edible gardens and just had such a great time. Talking with fellow gardeners is one of my favourite things, you can really cut loose with your earthly, edible passions, no need to hold yourself back because you know they “get it”.

While 17 gardens were open, we filmed four of them below as part of a live streaming option for others to tune in.  Apologies in advance for the poor sound quality – next time we’ll have a microphone for a better sound experience!

  1. Lisa and Anthony’s south facing garden, you can watch it here.
  2. My own garden can be seen here in two parts, part one and part two
  3. Rachel’s garden part one and then part two here.
  4. David Stephen’s Neighbourhood Community Garden

I started Home Harvest four years ago when I saw something similar happening elsewhere and thought “I want that for my community“. My hope is people see this and want it for their community too – and just crack on with bringing their own version to life.

These events are FUN and they build home and community resilience. In the face of the climate emergency it’s these types of community and skill/knowledge building events that are absolute gold. We need to know how to look after ourselves and one another and producing some of our food is part of that picture.

If you’re keen to have a crack, I can recommended collaborating with likeminded people/organisations and exploring local grant options through your Council to support the day.

Enormous thanks to the City of Hobart for funding this event four years in a row (sending a virtual fist pump your way) and to Eat Well Tasmania and Sustainable Living Tasmania for collaborating to bring more like to the day. And more thanks to Libby from Eat Well Tasmania for all these photos! I took exactly ZERO photos due to gas-bagging too much.
