Market Gardening Masterclass
March 1, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Sold out! However you can still put your name down on the wait list at the bottom of this page.
Join us for one day with master market gardener, Jean-Martin Fortier to learn how to establish and run a cranking market garden or a pumping urban garden that is environmentally regenerative, nutrient dense and financially successful!
Hailing from Quebec, Canada, Jean-Martin is the author of award wining book The Market Gardener and along with his wife, Maude-Hélène Desroches, runs Les Jardins de la Grelinette, an internationally recognized 10-acre micro-farm. With only 1½ acres cultivated in permanent beds, the farm grosses more than $100 000 per acre with operating margins of about 60 per cent, enough to financially sustain his family. The focus at la Grelinette has been to grow better, not bigger, in order to optimize the cropping system, making it more lucrative and viable in the process.
This workshop is for people who are serious about growing food in either an urban or farm context (or both). This one day of focused learning is a blessing for anyone who’s wanting to fast track to growing success and avoid years of trial and error.
This masterclass will teach you:
How to plan and establish a successful farming operation
Integrated pest management as a solution to your pest challenges
All about appropriate machinery for small scale growing
How to reduce tilling in a permanent bed system
Organic weed management
How to create biologically rich growing systems
Crop rotation methods
How to extend your growing season and create a resilient income
Efficient use of hand tools in a market garden
This course runs from 9am – 5pm and includes a vegetarian lunch and refreshments. We’ll also provide extensive online resources for you to continue learning well after the workshop.
Held in New Town at the Kickstart Arts Centre, (St Johns Avenue), this workshop is across the road from the Hobart City Farm. You’ll get to learn in, and next to this small market garden which has been largely based on Jean-Martin’s farming methods and techniques.
Established in early 2015, the Hobart City Farm is a social enterprise focused on establishing a vibrant, financially viable and environmentally regenerative small farm that grows a diverse range of food, builds community and provides meaningful employment. It’s a bloody great space to learn in.
