We’re partnering with Okines Community Garden in Dodges Ferry to bring you a special 6-part series of hands-on permaculture skills. This is workshop #5, Home Herbal Remedies. A one-day, hands-on introduction to harnessing the healing, remedial qualities of herbs, and turn them into your own, home-made personal care products.

THIS WORKSHOP WILL COVER
2. Learn hands-on how to make 4 different products that can be easily made at home:
- a herbal infused oil
- a herbal balm/ointment (first aid balm)
- a herbal tincture
- an oxymel
3. How to safely make beautiful, economical soap for home use, with cold-press soap methods using natural oils and lye.
How to use a soap calculator
Properties of oils and butters, safe use of lye
How to make soap using ingredients found in your cupboard (palm oil free)
The steps for making soap, what to use as a soap mold and how to cut and cure soap
WHO SHOULD COME TO THIS WORKSHOP?
We’ve designed this workshop as an introduction for anyone interested in making their own personal care products. Suited to beginner and intermediate herbalists, this workshop will demonstrate this process and give you the confidence to make your own soap and herbal products at home.
Bring some jars (200ml or larger) and together we will fill them with:
a herbal infused oil
a herbal balm/ointment (first aid balm)
a herbal tincture
- a bar of soap
As well as course notes and recipes.
Our caterers will spoil you with food to fill your belly, warm your hearts and inspire you to grow your own. And, of course, we can accommodate any dietary requirements.
Nestled in the Southern Beaches community of Dodges Ferry, Okines Community Garden is an inspiring place to learn, share knowledge and contribute directly to the wellbeing of the land and the people it supports. The gardens consist of mature fruit trees, over 30 raised veggie beds, chickens, bees and an outdoor kitchen providing a hub for shared outdoor meals and a workshop space. ‘The Garden’ is connected to Okines Community House – which provides added space for learning and undercover workshop needs.
HOW DO I GET THERE?
You’ll be provided with clear directions on how to get there prior to the course.
Monica Francia (she/her) is a Naturopath, Nutritionist and Herbalist currently practising at Goulds Natural Medicine, Hobart. She has a strong sustainability and social justice base for her practice and moved to lutriwita/Hobart to work at Goulds for its ‘farm to apothecary’ model. She runs regular workshops in herbal medicine making and menstrual health and is passionate about empowering folks with the knowledge and skills to support their health and nourish their communities. She is the chapter co-coordinator for Hobart Herbalists Without Borders, a non-profit organisation that run a free clinic and community events.
Sonja Ralph comes from a botanical science and outdoor education background with a wealth of lived experience in gardening and permaculture principles. She is the Community Garden Coordinator at Okines Community Garden and is a passionate beekeeper, soap maker, fermenter, preserver, gardener, homeschooler, knitter, sourdough baker, naturalist, renovator, radical homemaker!

Thanks to Okines, if you live in the Lower South East coast of Tasmania, you will qualify for a significant subsidy – each course will cost you just $150. We strongly encourage people living within the region to enrol, but these courses are also accessible to anyone that wants to join us! Areas that qualify for a subsidy extend from Sorell, to Swansea and down the coast to the whole peninsular, incorporating Dodges Ferry, Carlton, Primrose Sands and Dunalley.
